MIL-STD-461 - Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility
MIL-STD-461 governs the control of electromagnetic interference characteristics of subsystems and equipment. It matters for air conditioning because a variable-speed compressor drive, a blower motor and a control board all generate electrical noise.
Two test groups are commonly cited. CE102 addresses conducted emissions on power leads. RE102 addresses radiated electric field emissions. How to Read a Defence HVAC Specification: A Procurement Checklist
The following checklist is intended for use during technical evaluation. Each item asks for a document, not an assurance.
- Cooling capacity and the ambient at which it is stated. A capacity figure without a stated ambient temperature and a stated return air condition cannot be compared between suppliers. Ask for capacity at the design ambient, not at a nominal rating point.
